Keramikkurs-Research clay and iron

Information

Research clay and iron during a two day ceramics course in Fågelsjö

Kursen är en del av Hantverksfestivalen i Fågelsjö 14–19 juli 2025.

INNEHÅLL

OBS! Denna kurs genomförs på engelska

In this course you will learn how to source and use local and raw materials in ceramic processes.

You will experiment with small tiles and pots. They will be handmade from clay and colored with locally sourced Fågelsjö iron oxide.

The blacksmith of Bortom Åa used to work with this iron oxide powder to make iron tools and guns.

The first day starts with an introduction by Lotte de Raadt in her ceramics atelier in Fågelsjö. Lotte is a ceramicist and designer from Holland living and working in Fågelsjö in summertime. She will demonstrate a few ceramic tests and show products made with iron oxide found in different places in Europe.

After the introduction we will go on a field trip to source local iron oxide in the forest around Fågelsjö. You will harvest your own iron oxide and learn how to treat this raw material by washing, sieving and grinding it. After the drying process, you will be able to work with it. Because the iron oxide needs multiple day to dry, the next day we will work with iron oxide that has been prepared in advance.

Together we will start the second day with research into ceramics by writing different recipes for clay bodies, engobes and glazes mixed with iron. Afterwards, you will apply the iron oxide glazes on small, low-fired porcelain test tiles and you will make the clay body from earthenware clay powder that will be mixed by hand. At the end of day 2 you will have made several tiles and pots to continue working on in your own workshop or to bring with you as souvenirs from Fågelsjö.

After the course, the ceramic pieces will be carefully fired (at high and low temperature) and sent to you by post.

OM LEDAREN

Lotte de Raadt has a design and ceramics studio for conscious design. Through her work, she aspires to raise awareness about issues related to the usage of water.

In 2018, she initiated the Oer project in Eindhoven. The project is a collaboration between professionals who are sharing a common interest in ceramics craft and sustainable design. Within the Oer project we investigate various applications of local and natural (residual) materials for ceramic products.
